New York’s top dog got a secret promotion — leading political wags to suggest it’s part of a plan to boost his master’s Democratic pedigree.

Trooper, a cute Northern Inuit who joined Gov. Cuomo’s family in January, was renamed Captain by the time he was shown off to the puparazzi Feb. 12.

“The dog got a fast promotion,” quipped Democratic consultant George Arzt. “If you’re running for president, you can’t just have a trooper by your side — you have to have a captain, like Captain America.”

“Trooper implies state government,” Fordham University political scientist Dr. Christina Greer said. “Captain is patriotic [and] implies military.”

“Trooper” also reminded Greer of state police scandals Cuomo might rather forget.
