New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is forging ahead with a plan to build a tunnel between Westchester County and the north shore of Long Island. The main question circulating is exactly where would the tunnel connect along Westchester County.
This idea has been kicking around since 1938. Neither Nelson Rockefeller nor Robert Moses were never able to do it!
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that his New York State Department of Transportation has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest to advance the proposed Long Island tunnel project, which the Governor announced in his 2018 State of the State address. The RFEI invites interested parties to provide input on engineering, environmental, operations and financial considerations that will be used to inform the future development of a Request for Proposals.
“Improving and expanding our transportation infrastructure is essential to moving New York forward,” Governor Cuomo said. “Today we are taking another step to advance an ambitious project that would reduce traffic on the impossibly congested Long Island Expressway, improve connectivity, and help ensure the region’s future economic competitiveness.”

To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D, which means either flying cars or tunnels. Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight and won’t fall on your head. A large network of tunnels many levels deep would fix congestion in any city, no matter how large it grew (just keep adding levels).
Perhaps Virgin Hyperloop One (World’s largest Hyperloop company) should be responding to NY State’s Department of Transportation?
Currently New York State is considering other notable transportation projects. A rough Winter in Eastern New York demonstrates the importance of a Hyperloop between Stewart International Airport and New York City. When the three NY City airports close for weather, the alternative is Stewart International. NOW, how do you get into New York City? Certainly not a Short Line bus going over three hours on wet and snowy roads. The answer is a 66-mile Hyperloop.
Perhaps we should also be considering extending the proposed HYPERLOOP from NY City to Stewart Airport to Bradley (and maybe Albany, Capital of New York State and even more).
Another New York State project is the Beacon Line. It was an important freight line in past days. If we start out in West Trenton, New Jersey and build a port for container ships coming from Asia through the expanded Panama Canal. Then renew some existing railroads through New Jersey and along the Hudson River until almost Poughkeepsie. Next we need a new bridge to the East side of the Hudson River. BINGO! we have reached the start of the Beacon Line. Avoided the Port of NY & NJ. Once the Beacon Line ends, it is Connecticut!
