After President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, a funeral train was used to carry his body home to Springfield, Illinois, for burial.

In April every year since his death, a phantom ‘ghost train’ is reported travelling along the tracks, and on the same route which was taken by the official funeral train. However, this train never reaches its destination.

Reports of the phantom train have appeared in many major newspapers, New York’s Evening Times reported once, that the train passes noiselessly, and that when it is moonlight, clouds appear and cover the moon.

Once the pilot train has come to pass, the funeral train itself, complete with flags and streamers, comes rushing past. It is as if the tracks become covered with a black carpet, and the coffin can often be seen in the center…
