Missing AMTRAK “CAF” Baggage Cars and Other Mysteries

This is a photoshopped image going around the internet. The fact is the Amtrak Viewliner II order with CAF for 130 cars from back in July 2010 was suppose to begin deliveries by 2013. So far only the 55 baggage cars have been put into service. There is also the Nippon Sharyo bi-level order for 172 cars for regional Amtrak rail service from 2012 which was suppose to delivered this year. The $551 million dollars in Federal funding for these cars needs to be spent by September 30, 2017 or the grant will be withdrawn. A year ago the prototype car failed the FRA crash compression test which shut down production for a redesign. There are no recent news reports of production restarting.
