So who is Running for President of France in 2017?

No, not JFK of course. Only put him in picture because he is my ideal of a great President. And he DID have a French wife.

In upper right corner we have François Gérard Georges Nicolas Hollande. born 12 August 1954) is a French politician who has been the President of France since 2012. Hollande was previously the First Secretary of the French Socialist Party from 1997 to 2008, the Mayor of Tulle from 2001 to 2008 and the President of the Corrèze General Council from 2008 to 2012. He also served in the National Assembly twice as the Member for Corrèze‘s 1st Constituency from 1988 to 1993 and again from 1997 to 2012. Did a good job after the recent Paris “massacre” but best known for unbelievable unemployment levels.

At the bottom left we have Nicolas Sarkozy  born Nicolas Paul Stéphane Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa; in 1955)He is a French politician who served as the President of France and Co-Prince of Andorra from 16 May 2007 until 15 May 2012.

During his term, he faced the late-2000s financial crisis (followed by the recession and the debt crisis caused by it) and the Arab Spring (especially in Tunisia, Libya, and Syria). He married Italian-French singer-songwriter Carla Bruni on 2 February 2008 at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

In the 2012 election, the Socialist François Hollande defeated Sarkozy by a margin of 3.2 percentage points, or 1,139,983 votes.[3] After leaving the Presidential office, Sarkozy vowed to retire from public life. However, in September 2014, he announced his return to politics, and the UMP party (since renamed to The Republicans) has subsequently reelected him as its leader. On 2 July 2014, Sarkozy was charged with corruption by French prosecutors.

Not very popular, he is sometimes called Le Nain (the dwarf).

Now in the bottom right we have a newcomer to the presidential race (by virtue of winning the recent “regional” election in the southeast of the country.  Christian Estrosi (born 1955) is a French sportsman and politician. He is a former professional motorcyclist and Minister. He currently serves as the Mayor of Nice, and as a member of the National Assembly of France

He was a well-known motorcyclist and competed in many Grand Prix. His best result was a fourth-place finish in the 1978 500cc French motorcycling Grand Prix. He received the Youth and Sports gold medal.

He was a member of the municipal council of Nice from 1983 to 1990, when he resigned. He was re-elected in 2008, when he was also elected Mayor of Nice.

He has served as President of the Urban community of Nice Côte d’Azur since 2008 and Chairman of Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur since 2012. He served as regional councillor of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur from 1992 to 2002, and as its Vice President from 1992 to 1998.[1] He served as Vice-president of the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes from 2001 to 2003, and as its President from 2003 to 2008.[1]

He served as a member of the National Assembly of France for the 5th constituency of the Alpes-Maritimes from 1988 to 1993, then from 1997 to 2005, from 2008 to 2009, and has served in this capacity since 2010. In addition, he has held several ministerial positions in the French government in Paris. He was appointed in 2005 as Deputy Minister of Land Management .He was then appointed in 2007 as the Deputy Minister of the Overseas French territories (DOM-TOM). From 2009 to 2010, he served as Deputy Minister in charge of Industry. He is the recipient of an Doctorate Honoris Causa from the University of Haifa in Israel.

  1. Yesterday I was in New Ross, Co Wexford. There are pictures of JFK all around the town – his ancestors were a local family. I have visited his ancestral home years ago.
Christian Estrosi looks like a right guy to me 🙂

  2. I’m horrified at US Politics lately, aren’t you Penney? As an East Coast Coordinator, Statewide Campaign Chair, and front-man/speech writer for presidential candidates in 1992, 1996 and 2000 it seems that the lower the candidates go (I’m thinking Trump, but this problem is widespread) the more fans they get, and (is it possible) maybe more votes too. Does this confirm that the US voting population has been brainwashed by sensationalized “news” or that our education system is not strong enough to battle the daily barrage of propaganda that flows from White House to Media to our many electronic devices? Either way, and both ways, we may be in the process of electing the worst President ever. Already the last five presidents can be interchanged at 1-5 of the worst presidents we’ve ever had. I base this on the selling out of the US labor force, continual war, giving up of sovereignty to GATT 2 and the WTO, and our gross inability to reverse Global Warming. Of course, in 1980 our national debt was $1 Trillion and we’re past $18 Trillion now ($18,000,000,000,000). One day the value of the dollar will collapse amid hyperinflation,as the FED has printed up four times more money than we ever had before 2008. Now that this money isn’t propping up the NYSE, etc. it should be “quite a correction” ahead once the higher interest rates kick in. Ha, our government has no control over this, never did.
